It’s always interesting when bands cover other bands’ songs—hearing how one band puts their own “stamp” on a piece of music we’re already familiar with.

But what about a different kind of “cover?” What if artists “covered” other artists’ famous works—offering their own interpretation of an already famous painting or drawing? An interesting idea, to say the least.
Well, if you take that idea one step further, and have artists cover  famous comic book covers, you’ve got the potential for a really interesting art exhibit (and a great play on words).
Green Brain Comics, 13210 Michigan Avenue, has announced the opening of a new art exhibit entitled "COVERED" on Wednesday, January 13. The exhibit will be on display in Green Brain Comics's recently-named art gallery, Headspace.

Inspired by a website run by Los Angeles-based comic artist Robert Goodin (
www.coveredblog.blogspot.com), Headspace curator Dan Merritt has assembled several pieces by artists that have brought their own touch to famous and infamous comic book covers from several different decades.
"The theme for this exhibit has really sparked a creative flame." says Merritt "Each of these pieces has been lovingly recreated in tribute to the original art and the original artists that created them."

Featured in the exhibit will be works from Michigan based comic creators Paul Sizer, Matt Feazell, Sean Bieri and Chris Houghton. Joining them will be other well known local artists Eric Millikin, Davin Brainard, Bryan Durren and Heather Hansma. As well as many others, including Lizz James, Jesse Hughes, Jennifer Rose Evans, and a piece by Masheka Wood from New York.
If you want to get an idea for what kind of awesome art you’ll be seeing at the “COVERED” exhibit, I highly recommend checking out Goodin’s Covered Blog. Even for non-comic fans, this is a fascinating study of different artistic styles. Just like in music, some of the covers work really well (Guns ‘n’ Roses covering “Live and Let Die” by Wings), while others are a bit more of an acquired taste (William Shatner taking on Elton John’s “Rocketman”), but they’re all worth checking out just to see different interpretations of the same work of art.
The opening reception for the Covered exhibit will be on Wednesday January 13th from 7pm to 10 pm. And the art will be on view until Saturday March 6th.

HEADSPACE Gallery is inside Green Brain Comics in downtown east Dearborn. Hours are: Monday-Saturday from 10a-8p, and Sunday from noon-5p. For more information, call 313-582-9444.

A friend of mine sent me a link to that covered blog last year. I thought it was great. Will definitely be checking out this new exhibit.
