I just got done watching "Grease" on VH1 (yes, it's Friday night and my life is sad, why do you ask?), and it occurs to me: This film, above all else, serves as a phenominal socialogical study of American life in the 1950s. And these are some of the conclusions I've been able to draw after numerous viewings of this movie over the years (yes, my life is sad, why do you keep asking me that??):

- Tight choreography was highly valued. There was no telling when a routine could break out at a moment's notice- in shop class, at a game, at a fair, in someone's bedroom-  and if you weren't ready, well, you might as well stay home on Friday night.
- Greasers weren't so much "tough" as they were...what's the word...flamboyant.
- Unskilled hairstylery could result in pink hair and halucinations involving middle-aged men singing to you.
- People often remained in high school well into their 30s.
- Nerds were named "Eugene."
- The word = Grease.
- You couldn't just walk out of a drive-in.
- Life-long friendships were forged at cheerleader tryouts.
- The only rule in drag racing: There ain't no rules.
- Wine and Twinkies were considered a high-class dessert.
- The best cars on the market were automatic, systematic and hydromatic.
-  The federal government was experimenting in technoligies that would allow them identify individuals by photographs of their asses.
- Mooning was a federal offense.
- It was recommended that high school athletes smoke no more than two packs a day.

Such a different time, it's almost hard to imagine. Anything I missed?

Great list. But I think you forgot one biggie. If there's anything Grease has taught us about the 50s it's that any situation can be enhanced through singing.

I think I learned that not showing up for gym class hurts your pie throwing abilities.

(Greey, don't feel bad I caught the end of it last night too!)

Oh you guys are hilarious!

Believe it or not, I've never seen Grease. But after reading this, I think I want to!

I always thought it was weird what they did to the Sandy character at the end to make her look "hot." I thought she was so much hotter throughout the whole move than she was all skanked up in the skin-tight black pants at the end.

So, what I learned is that apparently skin tight black pants were the ultimate in "hot' back in the 50s.

I think she was always supposed to be hot, but the make over at the end made her "greaser" hot.

I always thought she was hotter in the dresses as the good girl too. Too skanky once she got the makeover.

OH There's another one: Greasers liked skanks.

You guys seemed to have missed a very important one...smoking gets you laid.

Rizzo - smokes - slut
Marty - smokes - has a wallet full of pics of guys - slut
Sandy - smokes at the end to get Danny while dressed like a slut
Danny - smokes & is a total player - man slut
Kenickie - smokes & helps make Rizzo more of a slut
Lead guy of the Scorpions gang - he smokes & he dates Cha Cha & every other woman around - man slut

I guess this illustrates the "cool kids" are promiscuous theory and "cool kids" smoked back then.

My favorite quote from the movie: "If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter"

In the 50s everything was divided between jocks, nerds, greasers and adults. If you weren't in one of those groups, you didn't get any lines, and you were relegated to the chorus and dance numbers.

I think I'd have been just fine with that. I'm not much of a talker, or singer. But BOY can I dance!!

j/k I can't dance either. I'd have been a miserable wreck in the 50s.
