I was just listening to WCSX (the classic rock station), and the song "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane comes on. Now, I distinctly remember being in high school when this song came out, sometime in the early 90s. Is this what they're considering "Classic Rock" these days?
I always thought classic rock was 60s and 70s, maybe some stuff from the 80s like Bruce Springsteen, J Geils and Aerosmith. But 90s music? Makes me feel old. |

I definitely don't think stuff put out in the 90s should be considered classic rock. I notice you posted this yesterday (Sunday), maybe you heard that song on their "Over Easy" show they run on Sunday mornings. Sometimes they stray from their usual playlist for that. |

I feel like if I was alive when it came out it should not be clasic rock or oldies! So anything made after 1985 needs to stay off the calssic rockc stations... |

Well, back in the early 00's I worked at Little Professor & we listened to 104.3 the oldies station & by the time I had quit working there I was hearing Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, and Wham and it drove me insane but they have to keep up. I mean, the Supremes aren't going to be olides forever...they will become something else & the music I grew up with (Culture Club, Madonna, Prince, New Kids...etc) they are going to become olides.
The issue at hand isn't "how dare these stations call those old" it's actually "how the hell did I get this old that the music I grew up with is classic."
Personally I think "oldies" are pop music from the 70's and earlier, "classic" is rock music from basically the same era, "modern" is alternative rock from the 80's and later and then you have "rock" which to me is rock and roll music from the 70's and later. Disco of course is it's own genre but gets played on the oldies station since it's more pop than rock.

I'm listening to Billy Idol on 104.3 right now...definitely not oldies...I wonder what will be up next? Maybe Poison or Motley Crue or Patrick Swayze's rendition of She's Like the Wind!
....it was Take on Me by Aha *shakes head* I guess the 80's are oldies now :(

 50s-60s: Oldies
60s-70s: Classic rock
80s: Retro
90s-present: I don't know.
That's MHO, btw. Nothing official. |

Well, in the 90s, I considered stuff from the 60s and 70s to be clasic rock, and that music was 20-30 years old. Now stuff that's 20-30 years old was made in 1980-1990. So, yes, the music of our youth is now "classic." (uh, depending on when you were a youth, of course.) |

I consider classic rock to be 1979 or older. The only reason they play newer stuff on classic rock and oldies stations is to draw in younger listeners (who are considered to be a more attractive demographic. They spend more than people over 50). |
